Blue Vervain, Verbena hastata, is a very special and truly beautiful teacher. My journey with Blue Vervain has been very interesting, as it has mirrored a part of myself that was deeply hidden away, perhaps even difficult to acknowledge or confront. Very often, we are aware of what is truly happening within us, recognising certain habits or patterns that desperately need to change, yet we protect ourselves from exploring these deeper issues, driven by fear, past traumatic experiences, or coping mechanisms. For me, this internal pattern of disharmony often manifested as nervousness and physical tension, especially in my neck and shoulders, as well as many painful knots, stiffness, and tightness, all of which Blue Vervain helped me address. I share these medicine stories and teachings from plants to remind you that we all face our own unique struggles and journeys in this human form. Each experience is unique, but the inner work we do on ourselves, along with the courage to face our ''demons''', brings us closer to our true true nature. Remembering, that we do not need to be "perfect" or "fully healed" in order to share our gifts, visions, and the magic we each hold within us.

I have worked intimately with Blue Vervain exploring their medicinal properties, enjoying them in the form of tea, tincture, and, of course, nurturing them by growing them and communing with their spirit. I have attempted to cultivate Blue Vervain, along with our native species, Verbena Officinalis, for years without any success. However, last summer, both germinated for the very first time and even self-seeded around the garden. Every time this happens I know that it is not a coincidence. Plants have their own ways of showing up in our lives, when we are truly ready to listen + receive them.

As Spirit medicine, Blue Vervain teaches us to embrace and accept our humanness, encouraging us to zoom out of our busy minds and return to the wisdom of our bodies. They help us relax and flow, allowing us to see situations from a fresh perspective and acknowledge the importance of rest for both body and mind. From this place of rest + ease we can channel our vital energy, passion, creative ideas, and enthusiasm in a balanced manner, as well as inspire and lead others.

A Vervain person tends to ''live'' in their heads, constantly planning, analysing, or working, often pushing themselves to the verge of burnout, neglecting their needs for sleep, rest, and nourishment. They often set many goals and expect a lot of themselves and others, because in their mind, this is how things should be—this is how they had envisioned it. As a result, they often push themselves to the point of exhaustion, neglecting their needs for sleep, rest, and proper nourishment.

Vervain is a beautiful plant ally for passionate + motivated perfectionists who prefer things to be done their own way and find it quite difficult to let go and surrender, as they become strongly attached to specific outcomes. This pattern of ''perfectionism'' can sometimes manifest through the judging and criticizing of others, which, of course, serves as a reflection of their own inner critic and internal judgments. As I mentioned above, these tendencies may stem from upbringing, conditioning, and protective or coping mechanisms developed in response to past trauma (none of which should be viewed as something to be ashamed of, here also a personal experience x )
